What We Do
Tertiary
Scholarships
Every year the trust provides scholarships to aid local students gain tertiary education, whether that be at university or at technical institutes. Students shortlisted may have financial hardship and otherwise difficult circumstances such that the scholarship provides significant benefit.
In the mid 1990’s the Trustees decided to switch the Horticultural Travel Award to an area in need of support, so the new McKee Trust Tertiary Scholarship was created. All of the ten local colleges in the Nelson-Tasman region are involved. Applicants are interviewed by a panel of three Trustees.
Each college yearly puts a student forward and up to 5-6 scholarships are offered annually of $7,500 to be split over 3 years. The Trust is committed to fund approximately $35,000 per annum on tertiary scholarships. The scholarship can be put towards cost of living, accommodation costs, purchasing books and student materials or put towards fees.
Previous McKee scholarship recipients have achieved success in science, medicine, engineering, environmental studies, the arts and numerous other areas. Many of these recipients have expressed a desire to return to our region once they have gained their qualifications and experience in their chosen fields.
